This post shares my diy painted doormat including how to paint a coir doormat to last.
What knd of paint should i use on door mat.
Would you believe that i have actually never owned a doormat.
I made several of them one year for holiday gifts.
Then just remove the tape.
Let s gather our supplies.
If your mat has been used on a floor it s probably very grimy and if it s black you can t see the grime.
I used black paint and the sponge pouncer.
It should be scrubbed thoroughly with a degreasing detergent such as trisodium phosphate tsp or dish.
Just firm stippling motions.
Some of the stencil edges started to pull up as they got wet with paint so i used my finger to hold them in place as i went.
You don t want to make sweeping motions because the paint will get underneath the stencil.
You can also use freezer paper for a stencil.
Use a stiff bristled paint brush or a stencil brush to tap the paint straight down onto the mat.
You can use a stencil tape it down and spray or paint with a sponge pouncer.
The method you choose depends on the type of paint you use.
This doormat is not only useful but it adds some character and whimsy for your visitors.
Yes you can paint those mats.
You ll probably think this is going to look awful when you start but just keep painting.
But if you do you ll need an iron to adhere the freezer paper to the mat.
Now that i think about it it s kind of weird but we ve moved so often over the last five years that i didn t really accumulate anything that wasn t worth moving.
The mat will soak up a lot of paint make sure you have plenty on hand before you begin.
To finish your project gently remove the pins and stencil to reveal your message.
Should you use freezer paper or stencil vinyl.
Either will work well.
Using your paint brush dab and brush the paint onto your rug.
This stencil vinyl is my favorite to use and it is very sticky so it works well on the doormat.
Dab the paint on.
If you are using a light color of paint use a light color of sharpie another quick tip.
Let them know you are happy to see them even before you open your door.
It only takes about five minutes until the paint builds up enough for it to look like an even coat.
Using brush strokes got little tiny dots of paint everywhere.
And i have the shirt to prove it i ended up making a cactus one door mat no stencil.
It made a great conversation piece and cause lots of laughter.
Just fill in with paint.
Allow plenty of time to dry.
For any painting process though the surface should be clean and dry.
Put it on pretty heavy since it soaks into the coir.
One coir doormat i really love how this type of doormat works for this project.
